Finding Fanny Upodcast Review

This Episode of Upodcast we are joined by the always wonderful Anisha Jhaveri in our search for Fanny. Before we get into our review of Homi Adijani’s follow of Cocktail starring the lumiscent Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Pankaj Kapur, Dimple Kapadia and Nasseeruddin Shah, we veer of topic as we always do.

We give our thoughts briefly about Deepika’s cleavage-gate with Times Of India, Asim goes on a rant about being disappointed by highly praised “Hindies” and Anisha talks about how watching Kick almost broke her as a human being.

What Have We been Watching? And Robocop (2014) Upodcast

This is a busy episode so comes with a “wide load” sticker on the back.  Martin walks down the more arty path, talking about a classic Bernardo Bertolucci, The Conformist, before keeping up the Italian end by frankly, gushing about The Great Beauty, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film this year.  Surely the contemporary equivalent of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.  Rounding off things is The Time Being, starring Wes Bentley and his very serious eyes and a star turn from Frank Langella.

Asim and Ahmed bring things bang up to date with talk of TV and blockbusters.  Dancing around the podcast they talk about Cuban Fury (Nick Frost and Rashida Jones) before moving on to Graceland and Gang Related.  Tom Cruise’s latest action blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow is reviewed by Asim, before we round things off with a battle royale: Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi (ish) satire and all round cult classic, Robocop versus the 2014 version by Jose Padilha.

Karan Johar and the cast of Student Of the Year Upodcast Interview

For the promotion of Student of the year, Karan Johar accompanied by Sid Malhotra,Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt flew over to London to talk to the UK press and Upodcast was invited.

If you have ever seen a full press conference it’s pretty hard to get a non rehearsed answer out of the celebrities especially so if they have the quick wit and verbal prowess of Karan Johar, nevertheless we had a 1 one 1 interview where we could ask a few more personal questions.

Student of the Year is in theaters from today and I hope you enjoy our interview with Karan and the rest of the cast.

Don 2 Upodcast FlashBack

We recorded this podcast just a day after Don 2 came out in a casual late night chat with our good friend Danny Bowes, from MoviesByBowes and also IndieWire (he’s been firing from both barrels so definitely check out his work).

Unfortunately I’m only now getting to posting it since there were some audio issues that i could only solve now as I didn’t want to give you guys a bad experience listening to Upodcast, but with Priyanka Chopra coming at us with a critically acclaimed performance in Barfi and her career as a popstar starting, as well as just not being to wait long enough to talk Shahrukh until Jab Tak Hai Jaan comes out in November, it was the right time to dig up and dust of our great chat about Don 2 again.

The discussion is still very geeky and very indepth as usually is the case with Upodcast. Bringing you a twist on Bollywood reviews that no one else does.

We talk the Superstar that ShahRukh is, what kind of movies he wants to make and how he wants to project himself, and we even go into the age old Salman vs Shahrukh debate ( in a respectful manner)

We covered Don’s release quite intensly and even did an interview with director Farhan Akhtar in our inimitable style that you can check out here! ( funny story, Shahrukh actually stepped into the room when we were talking to Farhan on the phone so we were only 1 degree away SRK, WOOHOO)

Review Kahaani Upodcast ft FilmiGirl

We team up with FilmiGirl to talk about Sujoy Ghosh’s Kolkata based thriller Kahaani starring Viday Bhalan.

Upodcast are in depth film discussions for film geeks so we have two part in the show. We stay spoiler free until the mid point and after the interval we delve right into spoiler territory as a film like Kahaani deserves a in depth discussion.

As usual we go off on a few tangents as the filmography of Sujoy Ghosh, Why his Aladin is an underrated crowd pleaser, Bollyfatigue and if celebrities should be retweeting every review on twitter?

After the spoiler section we talk about how Kahaani stands up to other movies with a famous twist, who else could have played Vidya Bagchi and the soundtrack and religious themes in Kahaani.

I hope you enjoy the show and do leave us a comment below or a review on iTunes.

You can read FilmiGirl’s review on her website by clicking here.

Disclaimer: at my 2nd viewing of Kahaani I noticed I had walked in late and missed the first 10 minutes of the movie so some of my comments might seem a bit nonsensical but hey ho, it’s all part of the fun!

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Upodcast Review

The Rom Com season is upon us and the first to kick off is Dharma’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu directed by newcomer Shakun Batra and staring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Who else can we invite to sweeten up Upodcast than the charming and bubbly Honey from the very popular site The Daily Honey.

We break down the movie, the performances and how Shakun Batra scored on his first directorial venture but we also widen the discussion by talking about quirkie rom coms in general and how Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu stacks up to them.

We discuss the merits of attaching fake bangs. Wonder if cool people still have sex in bathroom restaurants and what the future would hold for Riana and Rahul when the movie ends?

Azaan Preview

I’ ve been quite intrigued with Azaan since I first came across the trailer but been so busy lately that didn’t have the chance to post it, we havent been able to review the latest Bollywood releases either but will be releasing a podcast where we catch up and talk about Bodyguard, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Force and all the forthcoming releases with Bollywood diva and great buddy of ours FilmiGirl. Keep your eyes out for that episode or subscribe to iTunes so you dont miss any episodes of Upodcast which are frankly pretty amazing.

So tomorrow sees the release of Azaan, the Indian International espionage thriller by new comer Sachin Joshi and ad filmmaker Prashant Chadha ;who previously directed Aap Ka Suroor with Himesh Reshamiya avec casquette , but we shouldnt hold that against him (or should we?). I was quite reluctant as commercial directors making a movie just make everything kinda look the same, very slick and clean where as a spy thriller needs a bit of dirt and grime in my mind.

Although surrounded by controvery in India at the moment, but then again isnt every other movie release surrounded by some sort of controvery? It’s seems to be part of the marketing mix now. Maybe mixing religious iconography, lyrics and playboy bikini models might not have been the best way to do things? But when you are a business tycoon financing your own debut, who is anyone to say what you should or shouldn’t do?

I do appreciate the fact that Sachin Joshi is going for a non conventional movie debut and the spy thriller hasnt been seen too much in Bollywood except those few horrible movies Mani Shankar made a few years ago and I imagine Saif Ali Khan‘s next release Agent Vinod is going to be in the same mould.

Azaan’s also been shot in a gajillion countries which might be a double edges sword as almost no indian director has ever been able to succesfully direct a non indian cast, you can quote me on that.

The soundtrack of the movie is pretty amazing too with Rahat Ali Khan and quite a few other big names, I’ve added some tracks I liked and some stills from the movie after the trailer.

The subject does make me nervous and I hope they handle it with some sensitivity but can it really be any worse than Ajay Devgan’s- The Rock remake- Zameen City Under Threat. And I do hope that although inspired by the Bourne Series, that the director is able to hold the camera still so we can see the action.

Here is the synopsis from the press release:

Synopsis: ‘Aazaan Khan’ (Sachiin J Joshi) – a young, upright army officer working for RAW (India’s Research and Analysis Wing) with a mixed lineage of Afghan and Indian parents, as part of his duties, gets drawn in to the murky world of espionage only to find his younger brother a suspected terrorist. Torn between his love for his country and his brother, Aazaan embarks on his mission of unravelling a conspiracy of science and technology, which turns uglier when he realises that it stands to threaten the 1.2 billion population of one of the largest developing nations in the world – India. What unfolds is a fast paced story of one man’s determination to save his country against all odds of human defiance. Strengthening him in achieving his mission is his relationship with Afreen – a beautiful Moroccan girl who grounds him with human love and emotion to help him reach his goal.

A harsh and hard-hitting portrayal of an issue that continues to plague the modern world, ‘Aazaan’ is a captivating story that delves into the global issue of terror, presented on screen by one of the key influencers among the new generation of pioneering Indian filmmakers, Prashant Chadha. Touted to be Bollywood’s biggest espionage thriller ever, ‘Aazaan’ is set in one of the world’s now top five economies, India, but travels to international territories as far afield as Germany, Morocco, France, Poland, Thailand, China and South Africa, highlighting how a single seed of hatred can spread so rapidly across the world.

Here is the trailer:

Ep 37 Vidyut Jamwal Interview Exclusive – playing the villain in Force

Force is this week’s big Hindi release and we had a chance to have a conversation with Vidyut Jamwal, the surprise package and debutant villain pitted against a very buffed up John Abraham, in the remake of South Indian Kaakha Kaakha which originally starred Surya and Jyotikha (find our review here).

Force is already getting rave reviews (our review will be up shortly) and this is probably due to a large part to Vidyut’s performance. And I am sure as soon as the ladies (and some gents-apparently 10-12% of the male population) will get a look of Vidyut’s six-pack, they will turn into goo.
Vidyut was raised in an ashram and has been training in various different styles of martial arts since a very young age so he is definitely a good match for John’s bike lifting shenanigans.
Check out some of the stunts he did for the media at a press event.

Source: Fox Star India
We had a very nice time speaking with Vidyut, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and has that gusto that new comers have, plus he complimented me a few times so that always gets you brownie points.

The interview happened on the phone so there are a few things that gets lost in translation but I am sure you will have a great time listening to our chat.

Melissa McCarthy(Bridesmaids) And Joel McHale (Community) Train For The Emmys!

The Emmy nominations are about to be announced this thursday and to create some viral buzz here is a hilarious video of last year’s Emmy host, Joel Mchale, loved by Upodcast for his role in one of our favorite shows Community and Melissa Mcarthy, who almost stole the show from Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids, “training” for this years awards show which I assume Melissa will be presenting after her succes in Bridesmaids.

Tune in for Episode 30 of our Podcast (Posting this week but if you subscribe to Upodcast in iTunes there is no chance you’ll miss it!) to hear our review of Bridesmaids but Melissa does keep surpising us with her abilitiy throwing herself headfirst into any comedic possibilites especially as we only knew her as Sookie from Gilmore Girls before this. (Yes we confortable enough in our masculinity to admit to having seen episodes of Gilmore Girls)

Since we all love trainging montages (with freeze frame ending and all), and both of these performers are wonderful, we thought we coudl post this clip even if have no interest in the Emmy’s whatsoever.(Unless Community wins, then YAY!)

Check out the clip below!

Let us know what your thoughts and if you are tuning into the Emmy’s this year in the comment section .
