Ep 92- Daulat Ki Jung ft Pitu Sultan

Episode 92 of Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast features 1992’s DAULAT KI JUNG. Our guest this week was Her Highness Pitu Sultan and this was her one and only choice for you, her adoring public.

Loosely based on the Hollywood film MCKENNA’S GOLD, this movie is several things, none of them good: it is a college romance, an elopement story starring the greatest elopers of their generation, a Romeo and Juliet story, a treasure hunt, an anthropological exercise, and an investigation of the uneasy nexus between crime branch officers and vampires.

Starring Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla, Kiran Kumar, Shafi Inamdar, Tiku Talsania, Dilip Tahil, Paresh Rawal and KADER KHAN (with guest star, Coffin Donkey), Daulat ki Jung is a trip back in the time machine to a very different Bollywood.

Ep 10- Andaz Apna Apna – Khandaan Podcast

Welcome to Episode 10 of the Khandaan Podcast, where we come at last to the one movie we’ve constantly been quoting – 1994’s Andaz Apna Apna. Starring the rare movie combination of Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, this Khantastic film was a big flop when it came out but has attained cult status since then as seen in our poll where it beat out the most commercially successful film of 1994, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…?

Costarring Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Paresh Rawal in key roles, this Rajkumar Santoshi film offers a veritable who’s who of character actors who elevate the sketches that make this movie a classic. If you can make it past Asim, Sujoy and Amrita crying with laughter as they struggle to describe what they liked about this film, you might find old memories awakened.

However, is this a movie we can recommend to newbies and non-native speakers? Join us as we discuss weighty issues such as effectively translating comedy, self-referential comedy in Bollywood, Aamir Khan’s undercooked comedic chops, and whether we had the same tastes as children as we do now.

Is this the original version of Character Dheela?

During the promotional run of the blockbuster Ready, there were  rumours circulating about introductory song Character Dheela being reshot as Salman Khan and the production company Tips weren’t really happy with the grandeur of the original version. The rumours took the usual route of first being multiplied and enlarged (allegedly director Anees Bazmee was annoyed of being side tracked and then close to walking off, then Farah Khan was being approached) , then denied and as soon as the movie became a hit, completely swept under the rug.

Now there is a remix version out of the song on the Ready Facebook page that suspiciously looks like the the original version that was shot? If you want to have a look at what Character Dheela might have looked like. have a sneak peak here

The picturization looks awful and looks more like No Entry which came out years ago. Above all Zarine Khan must be thanking her stars that the reshoot decision was made because after the movie’s producers, she is probably the one that benefitted the most in terms of buzz, as her appearance was really appreciated (as it was by us in our original review which you can read here)

Let us know what you think of Character Dheela in our comment section below!
