Oscars 2012 Wrap Up and The Descandants

  • by

Upod goes Oscar crazeee!  Only joking, we’d never stoop that low.

The Upod Oscar special isn’t really about how much we like the awards or the ceremony, but it’s a great chance for us to dissect the top movies of the final year and 9 times out of 10, tell the Academy where they went wrong.  With The Artist garnering the 3 major wins and given the competition it faced, we didn’t have much of a leg to stand on this year.  Hugo did of course match The Artist in sheer volume of wins (5 each) but these were predominantly technical.

Naturally, two of our favourite movies of 2011 were nowhere near the red carpet: Drive and Source Code.  Perhaps there’s just too much existentialism in both of these – that or the “eeeuuuwwwww” factor (for seeing Jake Gynenhall all wired up on a drip and for Christina Hendricks’ brain being blown into 11 354 little pieces in the motel).

The main event for this week’s episode and tying in nicely with Oscar, is The Descendants.  Alexander Payne’s acclaimed film that tells the story of a man who tracks down his soon-to-die wife’s lover to tell him she’s dying was the darling of the nominations.  Artfully shot and never straying onto the sugary side of the street, “Gorgeous” George’s latest performance is certainly praiseworthy and the film itself merited the acclaim that came its way.  We give a typical Upod take on this…and also tell you where the director got it wrong!
