Ep 65: Lagaan

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back for Episode 65 where we are joined by friend of the podcast Shai Hussain to discuss a true legend of Indian cinema: LAGAAN (2001). Join us as we throw brickbats and flowers.
Check out Shai’s work at his personal page and join the fun at Bombay Funkadelic!
Directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar who joined the big leagues with this film, Lagaan starred Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Paul Blackthorne, Rachel Shelley, and a host of character actors who would go on to form the nucleus of Gowarikar’s acting troupe over the years: Rajesh Vivek, Raghubir Yadav, Aditya Lakhia, Pradeep Rawat, Amin Hajee, Raj Zutshi, Akhilendra Mishra, Yashpal Sharma, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, AK Hangal, Suhasini Mulay, and others.
A Short Timeline:
00.25 Shai tells us about his upcoming project – tell the BBC to produce it!
26.25 Amrita watched runaway Netflix hit, 365 DNI so you don’t have to
37.15 We watched the trailer for BULBUL on Netflix and yup, Anushka Sharma is the most exciting producer of our times.

Ep 64: Sushant Singh Rajput, Gulabo Sitabo and Axone

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is back to the CoronaCast with Episode 64. Unfortunately, this episode was recorded just as news broke about Sushant Singh Rajput’s tragic passing, so while we do mention it, we’ll have a more in-depth discussion of the fallout in our next episode. The news also cast a pall over the episode but… you know, sometimes you just try your best to keep your head above water. Hopefully, that’s what this episode helps you do as well.

Other topics of discussion included:

Asim and Sujoy watched GULABO SITABO, the new Ayushman Khurana – Amitabh Bachchan movie that premiered on Prime. There were Thoughts about it.

Sujoy recommends AXONE, a wholesome new movie on Netflix about life as it is lived by those from the Northeast in other parts of India, specifically Delhi.

Amrita watched WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING and its Malayalam remake CHANDRALEKHA for another episode of The Other Banana podcast. She’ll post a link on Twitter if you want to hear her thoughts on them.

And finally, Asim shares his impression of KIREEDAM, the Malayalam original of his favorite Jackie Shroff movie, GARDISH. (By the way, for those of you wondering, the name of the actor who plays Mohanlal’s father in Kireedam is Thilakan and he and Mohanlal made a legendary pairing in Malayalam cinema, so props to Asim for picking up on that.)

Once again, as this is a CoronaCast episode, we wander all over the place and don’t have a timeline for you. Join us next week for more shenanigans, slightly happier news and the mother of all Aamir movies, LAGAAN.

Ep 63: Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Choked and Chintu Ka Birthday

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast’s 63rd episode proves to be the charm with Shahrukh Khan’s iconic KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA (1994).
If “wholesome” was a movie, it would be this film by Kundan Shah. Reportedly SRK’s own favorite out of his many films, this is a film that has stood the test of time. Joining us for the episode is Aditya from The Other Banana podcastaka @gradwolf on Twitter.
A short timeline of topics:
  • 03.35 Aditya has watched the now defunct AIB’s first production – Chintu Ka Birthday
  • 15.00 Silverscreen.in published *the* definitive article on Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu’s #MeToo allegations and it’s a real doozy
  • 23.05 Sujoy and Aditya watched Anurag Kashyap’s CHOKED and have decided he must be saved from himself
  • 31.31 HuffPost India did an Abhay Deol retrospective and it was unintentional top comedy
  • 48.47 The Main Review: KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA

Ep 62- Kaamyaab, Betaal and Jackie Shroff – Khandaan Ko Rona Aa Gaye

Khandaan: A Bollywood Podcast is now on it’s 62nd episode… and we’re once again doing a Corona round up. For those of you struggling with all the current events in the world and need a break, we suggest you skip the first 10 minutes because we’re not in the best of moods to be honest.
However! We soon move on to discussing the latest Red Chillies Production for Netflix: BETAAL. Sujoy is happy to report that it continues a long and proud Red Chillies tradition by being absolutely mediocre.
Asim broke character to watch KAMYAAB, another Red Chillies effort for Netflix that isn’t entirely awful. It is definitely the better reviewed project of the two.
After that gargantuan effort, Asim needed a little cheering up so he obviously looked up KAALA BAZAAR (1989), starring Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. This is a segue onto our discussion about Jackie, an actor whose work we grew up watching but never discuss for some reason. Do let us know your favorite Jackie movies.
And to round everything off, we discuss a recent article in Bollywood Hungama wherein single screen owners complain about the lack of massy content from Bollywood and the artistic ambitions of its most reliable performers.

We don’t have a timeline for you as these special episodes go back and forth, but join us next week for our regular programming!
