Ep 37- Bharat, Chopsticks, Saaho, Super 30

In Episode 37 of the Khandaan podcast, we discuss a new Khan movie – 2019’s Salman Khan-on-Eid release, Bharat.

This movie hit the headlines even before it went into production when Priyanka Chopra, the original lead actress, chose to leave the film on the eve of shooting for vague reasons that eventually resolved into her getting married to Nick Jonas. However, this was pretty much the only interesting thing that happened to this film as we discuss during the podcast. Co-starring Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani (whose name we learn to pronounce from Asim of all people), Jackie Shroff, and Tabu, among other talented actors, this movie by reliable helmer Ali Abbas Zafar stands on the cusp of something good and interesting… and then backs away slowly.
We compare Bharat to its Korean original and discuss some of other content we have consumed over the past couple of weeks such as Netflix’s Chopsticks and things we plan to consume when it comes out like the next Prabhas-starrer Saaho.

A timeline:

  • 07.07 Chopsticks on Netflix: the mysterious disappearance of Abhay Deol and the crowded state of streaming in India
  • 21.15 Saaho – the new Prabhas starrer and what it means for Prabhas and cinema in India
  • 30.45 Super 30 and Hrithik’s long run of stinkers
  • 37.10 Bharat
  • 42.00 Ode to My Father vs. Bharat
We also have a new poll for the next episode and the theme is historical. Or should we say “historical”?

Ep 36- Rangeela

Welcome to Episode 36 of the Khandaan podcast – your home for all things related to The Khan Troika. This week we make a deep delve into the past with 1995’s Rangeela, starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff.

Directed by Ram Gopal Verma, Rangeela was a relaunch for Urmila, who had already had an extensive career as a child actor but was struggling to make the leap to adult dramas the way so many child actors do. Rather unwittingly, it was also a departure for star Aamir whose commendable performance here is different from anything he had done before. This movie is also notable for its music by AR Rahman, which was a sensation when it released and is seemingly ageless. This was a very happy trip into the past for the three hosts who have lots of personal anecdotes to share as well as a new appreciation for the strengths of this film.

We also discussed the London Indian Film Festival or the LIFF, which is going on right now. Tickets are still available and this might be your chance to see some seriously good cinema. Sujoy and Asim had some contrarian thoughts about Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, a movie currently playing on Netflix but which has had a significant presence on the festival circuit, including LIFF. We also discuss the trailer for the new Ayushman Khurrana movie Article 15 – and how Asim and Amrita are sadly not in the best mental or emotional space for it.

A Timeline:

0.55 The problem with Article 15
3.12 The line up at LIFF
8.00 Thoughts on Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota
20.02 Rangeela

Our next episode will feature the Annual Salman Eid Release (this year it’s Bharat), so remember to tune in next time!
